Why it glows, and why there is so little of it

In the 1980s a miner named Heitor Dimas Barbosa spent years digging into one hill near São José da Batalha, in the Brazilian state of Paraíba. What came out was a tourmaline that looked lit from inside. The cause was copper, which no one had found coloring a tourmaline before.

The stones reached the market in 1989 and prices went vertical. The original Brazilian deposits have given very little since. Copper-bearing tourmaline was later found in Nigeria and Mozambique, and fine stones from anywhere remain some of the rarest gems on Earth.
